MIE Software Support Note

Subject:

Installing MIE Software Products in a networked environment

Applies To: All Products
Date: 29th March 2000

In a multi-user environment, MIE Software products can be loaded on up to ten computers on a local area network. Illustrated below are two examples of network set-ups. Which setup you use depends on the type of network you have, Client Server or Peer to Peer .

Client Server Network
A client server network setup usually has one central server computer which is not used on an everyday basis for normal  computing activities but is dedicated to data storage. A client server network is illustrated below.

Client Server Network Configuration

In a client server network, the MIE Software packages should be installed on to the c: drive of each client PC (shown above with green screens). The software files should not be loaded on the server as a shared application. Using the software from the server as a shared application will create conflicts with multiple users overwriting and clearing each other’s work tables. The server should only be used to hold the data files that users then have shared access to.

Peer To Peer Network
A peer to peer network is the usual setup for a small network. All computers in the network are used on a day to day basis and none of the computers are used solely as a dedicated file server. A peer to peer network is illustrated below.

Peer to Peer Network

In a peer to peer network, the MIE Software packages should be installed on to the c: drive of each PC which wants to use the application. Data files can be created on the hard disk of any of the computers on the network. If you wish to share information, the computer which has the data files must share it's hard drive (or at least the folder containing the data files) with the other computers giving them read and write permission.
