Subject:

Setting up Internet E-Mail to work with MIE Software Products

Applies To: Summit Pro 2000, Summit Contact Manager, Summit Event Manager - Light
Date: 24 June 2000

The e-mail interfaces in Summit Pro 2000 require that you use an e-mail package which is fully MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) compliant. This does not apply to all e-mail packages. For example, Microsoft Outlook Express is only a simple MAPI client and does not have all the MAPI features required by MIE products. Microsoft Outlook, on the other hand, is fully MAPI compliant.

If you are using an e-mail product such as Microsoft Outlook Express, you need to move to a MAPI compliant product such as Microsoft Outlook to be able to use the Summit and MIE People e-mail interfaces.

Using the above products as an example, following are the steps you need to take to make this switch.

To be able to set up an Internet E-Mail service for Microsoft Outlook to use you need to know the following:

  • Your e-mail address
  • The name of your outgoing mail (SMTP) server
  • The name of your incoming mail (POP3) server (these are sometimes the same name)
  • The account name and password you use log on to your Internet service Provider's computer
  • The name of the Dial-Up Networking connection you use to connect to your Internet service Provider's computer.

If you already know all of the above click here.

If you do not know all of the above, the information can be retrieved from within Microsoft Outlook Express. Start Oulook Express then click Tools and then Accounts. This will display the following dialog box.

Outlook Express - Accounts Dialog Box

Select Mail and then click on Properties. This will display the following dialog box. The General tab gives you your e-mail address.

The Servers tab gives you the name of your outgoing mail (SMTP) server, the name of your incoming mail (POP3) server and the account name you use log on to your Internet service Provider's computer. We can't help you with the password.

This will display the profile name that uses this service.

Outlook Profiles

Note down this profile name and use it in Summit or MIE People when you are prompted for it. If you send someone an e-mail from the Personal Details screen (Summit) or People screen (MIE People) and enter the profile in the space provided on the e-mail details screen the software package will automatically use that profile for future e-mails.

If this does not resolve the problem and you are using Outlook 2000 click here.
