Backing Up Your Data Files

Applies To: All Products
Date: 16 May 2000

It is extremely important that you back up your data files on a regular basis.   The data files that need to be backed up are:

  • For Summit Event Manager (all versions) - files ending in .eve
  • For MIE People - files ending in .pld
  • For the Summit Contact Manager - files ending in .cmd
  • For the Summit Membership Manager - files ending in .mmd

These files contain all the information you have entered. To ensure that information is not lost, these files should be backed up and then compacted at the end of each data entry session.

To back up your data files take the following steps:

If the data file is small enough to fit on a single diskette it can be backed up by taking the following steps.

  • Make sure that nobody has the data file that you want to back up   open.
  • Insert a diskette in in the diskette drive of your computer
  • Open Windows Explorer
  • Locate the .eve, .pld or .cmd file you want to back up
  • Click on the .eve file and keeping the left mouse button depressed, drag the file until it is over the icon for the drive you put the diskette in and then release the left mouse button
  • Windows will ask you to confirm the copy
  • Click on the Yes button and your file will be copied.
  • Once the data files become too large to fit on a single diskette, you will need to use your systems backup utility or a product such as WinZip to compact it and or back it up over multiple diskettes. Microsoft Backup is normally located from the Start Menu by going:

    • Start
    • Programs
    • Accessories
    • System Tools
    • Backup
WinZip can be downloaded from http://www.winzip.com.

Once you have backed up the data file you should compact it to make sure that the file is not corrupted. To do this take the following steps.

  • Make sure that nobody has the data file that you want to compact open.
  •
    • From the Main Menu Click File, then Open Event (Summit Event Manager) or Open (Summit Contact Manager), then open a data file that is not the one you want to compact.
    • Once you have opened the othe data file, click File, then Compact & Repair Data File, and then compact the data file.

If you think you may have a corrupt data file click here.

If you have modified the formltr.doc or any other mail merge documents these should also be backed up if you wish to keep your changes.

All other files required by the application can be recovered by re-installing.
