Using the Windows File Dialog Box

Applies To: All Products
Date: 29 June 2001

The Windows File Dialog Box, often described as the Event File To Open screen or File To Open screen, is the way you specify the names of data files you want to open or create. In the example below, we want to open a file called demo.eve that is in the Event Files folder on the c: drive (the local drive).

When the File Dialog Box is first opened it will usually be in either the My Documents folder or the software folder (for example, the semp folder for Summit Event Manager - Pro Version 9) as shown below.

File Dialog Box - Initial State

If you click on the down arrow to the right of the selected folder as shown below you can see where the selected folder is in terms of your hard disk and network.

File Dialog Box - Look in pull-down list

You can click on the File Folder to go up one level and see all the other folders on the same level as the folder that is currently selected as shown below.

Once you have located the folder you want, double-click on it to open it as shown below.

Once you are in the folder you want:

To open an existing file click on the file name and then click Open

To create a new file type the new file name into the File name: text box and then click Open.
