Installation Issue - Setup keeps prompting you to restart your computer

Applies To: Product List
Date: 23 March 2005

Symptoms

You receive the following error message when trying to run Setup:

Setup
Setup cannot continue because some system files are out of date on your system. Click OK if you would like setup to update these files for you now. You will need to restart Windows before you can run setup again. Click cancel to exit setup without updating system files.

If you click OK to update the system files, you are prompted with the following message:

Setup
Do you want to restart Windows now? If you choose 'No', you will not be able to run setup again until after the system is rebooted at a later time.

After you restart the computer, Setup does not continue.

If you then try to run Setup again, this same sequence of events is repeated every time, and the system files are never updated.

Resolution for Windows 95 & Windows 98

To resolve this problem take the following steps.

1. Note down the location your current copy of oleaut32.dll. It is usually located in c:\windows\system

2. Download an updated oleaut32.dll file by clicking here and save it to the c:\ (root) directory.

3. Close any open applications.

4. From your desktop select Start, then Shut Down, then Restart in MS-DOS mode

5. At the MS-DOS prompt type:

    copy c:\oleaut32.dll c:\windows\system\oleaut32.dll

Note that if your oleaut32.dll was in a different folder than c:\windows\system, you should substitute that folder in the above.

6. At the MS-DOS prompt type:

    exit

This will return you to Microsoft Windows
